I still remember the defensive stopper for Iowa being quoted after UofL took out Iowa in the semifinal game in 1980. He said of Griff "I've guarded lots of guys who could jump high. The difference is they all came down!"

Nick and Mclade: Yeah, Edgar needs an adjustment again..but others swear he was cheering and supportive when they saw him at other times during the game, so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt...until the next game

Roz, Yeah, Herb Crook was one of those hard-working, under appreciated cogs in Denny's 80's bulldozer. '87 was a shocker--one of our most under-performing teams. The 80's--U of L and IU--and Denny and Bobby (who hated to play Denny and finally stopped because Denny kept beating him)

Jeff and Dante: The legends swirling around the Living Legend are many and colorful. How about the one in the Dirt Bowl when Griff--as a high school player--dunked on Kentucky Colonel center Artis Gilmore, who was the most intimidating shot blocker in the pro game at the time. (Oh course, Darrell got decapitated by Artis when he tried it the next time...)

Here's a few things I remember growing up in the 'ville during the Griff era. The 48" vetical jump was as measured. The quarter stories were true as well. Also as D-Marsh said they ruled the playgrounds. Especially when the Dirt Bowl rolled around.

How about the time when Male was playing at Ft. Knox and both Griff and Turner were ejected for dunking in pre-game warm ups???

Darrell Griffith without question is the most incredible athlete in the University of Louisville's storied basketball history. I saw him do things that weren't even on film. This is when he was a sophmore and junior at Male High School. He and Bobby Turner were dominant on the playground scene before coming to UofL by participating in the Dirt Bowl.

Griffith was measured with a 48" vertical jump during the Olympic Trials when he had a pulled hamstring, which ultimately kept him from competing in the Olympic Games. He also jumped over a player in a college game. And yes, even though he was only about 6'2" tall, he could touch the top of the backboard. Just an incredible athlete.
