TN Tech Takes its Pummeling Well, as Cards’ Offense Stirs
Posted by frankpos on September 7, 2008

Players jump and pile on, to congratulate DT Adrian Grady on his TD. Ahh, a little special glory that a D player will savor forever.
51-10.
There, that made everyone feel a little better, didn’t it?
OK, I know Tech’s only 1-AA –but after last season and the UK game’s embarrassment, frankly I didn’t know what to expect.
We got a win and our offense –and kicker, god bless him — got a lot of much-needed positive game experience. All of that was huge.
But the thing that excited me the most continues to be our D. It was very solid again. Hell, it scored again!
Another thing that excites me greatly in terms of possible future W’s: Our Big East schedule is an even softer cupcake than I thought it would be. (Cincy and WVU both got bulldozed today to add to the Big East scrap pile.)
Much impressed with Doug Beaumont again –still doing his best Harry Douglass imitation with 5 catches, one breaking for 34 yards.
Another star: Vic Anderson showed both speed and an ability to shed tacklers, averaging 9.5 yards per carry, and totaling 116 for the game, plus a TD.

And, the Hunter Cantwell we remembered as an experienced , poised QB showed up– at least for all but a few moments of panic.

Hunter Cantwell "could- well' this game. Here Hunter sets up behind his O wall, which protected him well all afternoon.

A lot of the new guys got to touch the ball–TE Pete Nochta and WR Troy Pascley eached scored TD’s. As did DT Adrian Grady who rumbled for 19 yds and a touchdown.

WR Troy Pascley tasted the promised land for the first time on a sweet 35 yd catch-in-stride on a laser from Cantwell.

There’s more: We stretched the field with at least 3 bombs that went for big gains. The recently -shot Trent Guy came out full speed again, and took some hard hits–but hauled in 3 catches for good yardage. Josh Chichester continued to impress. Back-up QB Tyler Wolfe got some snaps. And we scored 5 out of 5 times in Red Zone opportunities for the game.

Oh, and, our D picked off a couple of passes.
In all phases, the effort was there–as was the execution for the most part (OK, not those first few Philpotts).

Yes, he made this one. Chris Philpott had a tough day--but toughed it out, and finally started to connect.

Indeed, this man is kicking barefoot. Ryan Payne came in for some real foot ball ala Lee Corso's barefoot kicker in the 70's.

Yes, there were many things to smile about on this weather-perfect day for football, with a stadium packed with happy fans.
We have a few extra days until K-State rolls into town. Practice, practice, practice.
Card fans, I wouldn’t change that channel quite yet from FBall to BBall.
Given the positives today and a very weak schedule, there may still be a good story left to tell in this football season …

Today was a fine day for the Cards. College football should be played on a Saturday. The defense continues to impress me. Ron English impresses me. Brock Bolen continues his leadership and toughness. The offense looks like it is coming on, with 450 yards. They will need it against K-State. And they will need the tough D. K-state proved they can score points this week against a FCS (Div-II) Montana State.
