Is Karen Sypher Crazy? Yeah… Like a Fox

(Ed. note: Actually, crazy like a female fox– which is called a “vixen”, appropriately enough… )
The latest salvo from Pitino’s defense team: They want to test Karen Sypher to determine if she is mentally competent to stand trial… based on her persistently inconsistent statements (i.e., lies) to the police, FBI, etc., her blatant disregard for her various attorneys’ pleas to keep her mouth shut, and her generally bizarre pattern of behavior.
It’s an obvious attempt by Pitino to further discredit a woman who is now increasingly being given national coverage because of the sheer sensationalism of her story and Pitino’s involvement in it–despite the fact that she has been found void of any credibility by the FBI, etc. and she is the one who has committed the FELONY.
And according to the attorneys out in Card Land–it’s a tell-tale sign by the prosecutors that they have an air-tight case and want to be sure she has no chance for an argument or an appeal based on a Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity defense (NGRI).
Is Sypher clinically “crazy”? Oh yeah… but not quite in the way most people would think. People totally off their rocker do not exhibit the level of planning and cunning being demonstrated here–this is a woman who saved her abortion receipt!
I’m not a psychiatrist–but I owned health care companies and interacted with –and recruited–physicians for over 20 years. So that’s at least equal to staying in a Holiday Inn Express.
And it’s my blog, so…
Out in Card Land, various psychiatrists see what I see: An obvious personality disorder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_disorder
Now, it is very difficult for me to parse out exactly which disorder, because the SPECIFIC diagnosis is based on several factors, many of which would only come out in a thorough psychiatric evaluation.
But, based on behavior exhibited thus far by Ms. Sypher, the pros out there believe she has an Antisocial Personality Disorder. Let’s look thru that list and see if we can perhaps determine which one might fit best …. how about: Narcissistic personality disorder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder
Criteria for diagnosis: A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
- Has a grandiose sense of self-importance
- Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal love (megalomania)
- Believes they are “special” and can only be understood by, or should associate with, people (or institutions) who are also “special” or of high status
- Requires excessive admiration
- Has a sense of entitlement
- Is interpersonally exploitative
- Lacks empathy
- Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
- Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.
Is this the type of “crazy” that makes you mentally incompetent to stand trial? No. The “spooks” out there (sorry Psych buddies) have sliced and diced us all, and found that around 75% of ALL people “suffer” from a Personality Disorder. Studies show almost all incarcerated criminals could be classified with such disorders.
So… just because you are clinically “crazy” obviously does not mean you can cop a NGRI plea and avoid jail.
However… her “disorder” still makes Karen Sypher delusional and potentially very dangerous. To both Pitino…and to other men (there is court documentation of her trying this almost exact same extortion gambit on another man! leoweekly.com/news/femme-fatale.)
Soooo …. Crazy? Maybe.
Diabolical, cunning–and dangerous? Most definitely….
