I do think it is time to bring back a major league team to Louisville. Being one of the founding fathers of the national leauge, and so much excitment has been brought back for baseball. Louisville could easily support an American League team. I love the bats but everytime I am dedicated to certain players the next thing I know they are moved to the Reds. It's hard to build up too much excitment. This is all my person thoughts - but I would get season tickets to an MLB team if we were to land one again.

I live in Louisville and have been told my great grandfather played for the colonels but cannot find his name on any roster on the internet either. The people I have spoken with at the louisville slugger museum as well as louisville slugger field have not been much help. I'm wondering if there is a roster that's not been located or something???? Good luck to you.

Sir, I live in Bowling Green & have a friend that thinks his grandfather played baseball for a team in Louisville. My friend will be 60 this wk, so his grandfather would have probably played in the very early 1900s. Can you possibly find any team roster with a "Harston" on it? Or, can you give me any idea where to look? Thanks for any help you can give.

Yes, Marvin--and the history of boxing in Louisville--deserves some special attention.

And, thanks for the kind words to everyone who responded.

Good stuff. I still hope to find a Honus Wagner tobacco card or cigar box some day.
You did not mention anywhere that Louisville became an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds after the 99 season, and moved to Slugger Field in the spring of 2000. This is one of America's great minor league ballparks, and has an atmosphere equal to any big league park, just smaller.

I still have some old Louisville Colonels programs in Mint condition from the 60's. Neat advertisements and photos in them.

You need to do a blog on Marvin Hart. He lived in Louisville, but he was born in Fern Creek, Ky, that slightly more refined town to the east. His stats:

Born: September 16, 1876, Fern Creek KY
Died September 17, 1931, Fern Creek KY
Record: 28-7-4 (19 KO) 8 ND

On his tombstone at Resthaven is inscribed "A friend to countless hundreds. A man among men, an ideal of children, a clean fighter whose example will continue to inspire the coming generations".

Great stuff, Frank. Thanks for remindng us of our wonderful baseball heritage.

Linda and I were there at the old Cardinal Stadium (season ticket holders)for the 1,000,000 fan night at the Redbirds game. A. Ray Smith was a great baseball man and his hard work is directly responsible for Slugger Field being here today. Glad to see the Cardinals continuing to add a new dimension to "baseball fever" here.

Nice bit of research, Frank. I still treasure the stock certificate ($10) that my uncle gave me for Christmas making me a partial owner in the old Louisville Colonels. Used to maintain scrapbooks every summer, and they were thick. Hung on every word from Ed Kallay on WAVE radio during the games. Remember Juan Pizzaro throwing a no-hitter in his first game with the Colonels. Good memories.
