Cards Blow Storm Away 88-63

Posted by frankpos on January 20, 2011

No post-Miracle malaise here….

In fact–the afterburners were still on full !

Siva Slam! Peyton nearly tripled-doubled, with 10 pts, 10 assists, and 7 steals

Shockingly, U of L dismantled the same, now senior- laden,  St. John’s squad that had dismantled the Cards by 19 last season in the Garden…a Red Storm that had been streaking , winning 6 of their last 8, including blasting #11  Notre Dame  in their last game… a team that was ranked #31 in Sagarin and has played the nation’s fifth toughest schedule…a heady ball club that turned the ball only  11 times a game on the average….and that had an excellent coach in Steve Lavin, who frankly thought he had his team ready for U of  L’s press and  three point shooters.

Hell, Vegas thought so too… the Cards were favored by only 6 at game time.

They were wrong…

Preston ! is feeling it

**************************************************************************************

The Cards simply overwhelmed St. John’s in perhaps their strongest 40 minute performance of the season.  They jumped on the Red Storm from the opening tip, making 15 of their first 19 shots–including 7  of 10  3-balls —and blitzed to   40-19 lead.

The only lack of concentration for the Cards came at the end of the first half, when the Storm surged briefly, and cut the lead to 13 pts.

But Louisville stepped on the accelerator again first thing in the second half with a 17-8 run, and their  lead never dipped below 20 from that point on.

And when the thunder from U of L was all over…the Red Storm had been spanked with their worst loss of the season….  Had been forced into 25 TO’s–more than double their avg…. had witnessed the Cards dish 24! assists against only 12 TO’s…and had been scorched  by the Cards shooting over 50% for the game on both 2’s and 3’s.

Heroes?  Galore.

**Peyton Siva shook off a shaky last game, and almost triple-doubled….10 pts, 10 assists, and 7 steals.

Siva led the Card's suffocating D with 7 steals.

*************************************************************************************************

He dished 10 A’s vs. only 2 TO’s , running the O with flare AND discipline.  Oh, he also stuck 4 of 5  2’s and 2 of 2  3’s  and grabbed 2 bounds.

“I thought Peyton did an unbelievable job tonight,” Coach Rick Pitino said in the post game presser.

**King Kyle Kuric was unconscious, popping  7 0f 9  2’s and 5 of 7  3’s, for a total of 20 pts.

**Senior Captain Preston Knowles continued to lead by example, stuffing the stats with 25 pts,  4 bounds, and 3 assists.

.

Preston continues to amaze...who'd thunk it 4 yrs ago when he came on as a walk-on..

***********************************************************************************************

**And, Chris Smith once again silently stuffed the stats –9 pts, 6 big boards, and 3 A’s.

.

Hidden hero Chris Smith again silently stuffed the stats. Blow ur mind on this: Over the last 7 games, Chris has made 58% ! on 2-balls and 47% on 3-balls (leading Big East), while averaging 12 pts, 5 boards, and 3 A's per game...

*********************************************************************************************

“Louisville beat us to the punch in all aspects of the game. …..From start to finish they were aggressive and played a very cohesive brand of basketball, while we were a step slow and passive…they were very precise in the execution of their offense,” said St. John’s coach Steve Lavin in the post-game presser.

Gorgui Dieng blocked 2 shots and distorted a dozen more. And grabbed 5 bounds-- and dished 2 assists--AND is showing a nice 10 ft jumper. I'm truly impressed with the speed of his progress ...

*****************************************************************************************************

The 19th ranked Cards are now 4-1 in the Big East…and  have won two of the games they were favored to win…and that they needed to win… to survive the brutal Big East gauntlet and  get to 10 BE wins–and an invitation the the Big Dance.

I have noted in past posts on games that this Cardinal team has accomplished some things that harken back to the 1996 Sweet Sixteen team.

I still feel that way…

And, I don’t know about you.  But I’m having fun watching this scrappy,  ego-less, team with no future NBA players…

And I think we’re all  in for a wild ride  over these next 6 weeks…

Here’s how Anvillen saw it…

Yeah...the story of this season. Stephan Van Treese was banging, until he blocked a shot and cramped badly...apparently in his upper thigh--but not knee--from where I was sitting 15' ft away. He joins: Jared Swopshire--groin injury; Rakeem Buckles--fractured finger ,lost for 3 more weeks; Mike Marra- sprained ankle; and the newest--Terrence Jennings, who sustained a hip-pointer the day before the game. 5 key players ! --if ur counting....
