Louisville sports fans–and Card fans in particular:

I have created a spot to show off your prized mementos to share with everyone. Tickets, programs, photos–anything you’d like to share. (See the above “Louisville Sports Scrapbook” tab after “About Us.”)

The idea for this new section came to me one day when I had some old Card programs, tix, photos, etc. that I was going to scan in personally, just for myself or for some stories I might write.

But then it struck me that it might be cool to see photos of other people’s prized Card sports mementos — and a brief word or two about why they are so meaningful to that person. And maybe create a spot to display them on my site, and use them in stories in the future perhaps.

Everyone has them–and I’m hoping some really old items will appear. For example, I was surprised recently on the boards when a 70+ yr old suddenly regaled us with his vivid retelling of the really original “Dream Game” –the 1958 U of L- UK game! He said he still had stuff from the game.

So, Card fans, scan and email your Card mementos to me –with your personal note about them if you want–and I’ll post them here, and in stories, so all of us can better remember and appreciate the best moments in our sports history.

Philintheville from Card Empire has started us off by sending some personal photos, a sample of which is below. (BTW, I googled for a long time and couldn’t find any image of this two-tone sport coat–so thanks Phil!)

<img class="size-full wp-image-609" src="http://hellinthehall.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/dream-game-1983-8personal-photos-courtesy-of-phillintheville2.jpg" alt="Dream Game 1983 John Y.
And I’ve added a few more from the 1975 Final Four clash between Denny and his mentor, John Wooden. Can you find Frankpos in the pics?

Thanks,

Frank

1975 Semi’s

I watched the game at a place on Main Street in Geneseo, New York, called The Palace Lounge. A real cozy bar, a little away from the loud college places where I could settle in, become ensconced. I had just taken a bus from Binghamton where I had escorted my girlfriend (now wife) so she could get another bus to Long Island. Rough times then, recently out of the Army, back to school, not much jingle in my pocket. Anyway, The Palace was actually a bowling alley with four (count ‘em) lanes manned (literally) with fourteen year old guys to set the pins up. Anyway, I got snuzzled in at the bar to watch Jim, and Curt, and Billy (we both had more hair) to the play by play. The thing I remember about Louisville is that they were “coming.” Just as you could “feel” the Green Bay Packers in 1959, I believe one of Lombardi’s first years, just as you kept hearing about this kid named Gretsky who played hockey in his back yard, it was the same feeling about The Cards. The feeling being, “well if not now, soon.”

I had three or eight Genesee Cream Ales and enjoyed the game immensely. I can remember Junior Bridgeman raining those parachute jumpers from far envirens and seeing the net move with a swish, but nothing else, no rim at all.

I didn’t feel so badly when we lost, because it was to Wooden. We were the better team, but sometimes you’ve just got to say, “What the fudge!”

I made it home OK that night, wending my way in the darkness, knowing that I just saw a basketball team that I would like for the rest of my life.
